A quiet day apart form a brief second year Iceland Gull. During the evening the wind eased and the sun came out, and a quick ringing session saw 15 new birds caught.

Another Hooded Crow was found this morning. It was picked up flying north low over the sea at the School and then spent an hour off the point before disappearing.

After yesterday`s fall it was a much quieter today but there was some good visible migration counts, including two flocks of Corvids crossing the bay which included a single Hooded Crow.

The wind veered around to the west and picked up during the afternoon prompting another watch from 13:30-15:00.  1 Velvet Scoter east at 14:20, 4 Red-throated Divers east, 203 Manx Shearwaters west, 9 Gannets west, 10 Kittiwakes east, 18 Little Gulls west, 4 Little Terns east, 3 Arctic Terns east and 3 Guillemots west.

A large fall of common migrants occurred at the Observatory today. The day started with classic fall conditions; overcast with a light south-easterly breeze. By 06:30 light rain started and immediately Wheatears,White Wagtails and Willow Warblers were all over the sea wall. It was obvious there was a big fall of migrants happening and the rest of the day saw the whole peninsular covered in birds.
 
The main species involved was Willow Warbler, with a minimum of 200 counted and 28 ringed. Many of the birds were exhausted and feeding on the ground. Other good counts included those for Common Sandpiper, Blackcap, Grasshopper Warbler, Whinchat, Wheatear and White Wagtail.

The rain cleared in the late afternoon and shortly afterwards the first Marsh Harrier of the year flew through. The highlight offshore came early on; a cracking summer plumaged Slavonian Grebe that flew east at 06:30. The day ended by counting wagtails on the pools at dusk and then it was time for a few beers!!

Attention was focused on the sea today after overnight gale force winds. The highlight offshore were the first Pomarine Skuas of the spring.

Today`s highlights included the first Manx Shearwaters of the year and Velvet Scoter offshore. Grounded migrants consisted of a small arrival of Willow Warblers and Wheatears, plus another Treecreeper.

Even though it was very foggy at first light at the obs, and it seemed as if there would be little visible migration based on the conditions, good numbers of Meadow Pipits were on the move; initially heading east, they started heading north once the fog cleared.

A light easterly wind, overcast conditions and rain showers before dawn produced a fall on the peninsular today. The main birds involved were Thrushes, Goldcrests, Chiffchaffs and Wheatears, with Garganey and Yellow Wagtail new for the year. 

Today we gained access to some newly created lagoons on the peninsular that look superb and were already full of birds including Garganey.

Offshore 
3 Wigeon, 21 Teal, 14 Common Scoters east, 16 Red-breasted Mergansers, 5 Red-throated Divers, 3 Gannets west, 1 Curlew east, 2 Little Gulls east, 11 Sandwich Terns, 2 Common Terns east, 4 Arctic Terns east and 14 Razorbills. Also 1 Atlantic Grey Seal.

Visible Migration 
1 Osprey north along the river at 18:45, 6 Woodpigeons east, 5 Sand Martins north, 1 Swallow north, 1 House Martin north, 6 Fieldfares south-east, 23 Redwings south-east, 9 Alba Wagtails north, 428 Meadow Pipits north, 1 Chaffinch east, 6 Goldfinch east, 6 Siskins east, 3 Linnets east and 2 Redpolls east.

Grounded Migrants 
2 Garganeys, 1 Short-eared Owl, 40 Goldcrests, 3 Coal Tits, 5 Sand Martins, 2 Swallows, 25 Chiffchaffs, 1 Willow Warbler, 2 Ring Ouzels found in the east fields during the evening, 40 Blackbirds, 9 Fieldfares, 10 Song Thrushes, 77 Redwings, 5 Robins, 64 Wheatears, 1 Yellow Wagtail and 4 White Wagtails.

Birding around the Obs this afternoon there seemed to be a lot more Crests and Chiffchaffs when a band of light rain appeared, so a mist net was erected and within 30 minutes 14 Goldcrests and 3 Chiffchaffs were trapped! Other new birds seen today included the first Tree Pipit and Yellowhammer of the year.

The highlights around the Obs today were the first Ring Ouzel and Willow Warbler of the spring.

Further observation in the evening produced 6 Common Scoters east, 1 Red-throated Diver east, 1 Great Crested Grebe, 53 Sandwich Terns east and 2 Auk sp. east.

A light south-easterly breeze over the Obs produced a big push of birds today including a big count of Meadow Pipits, a sprinkling of grounded migrants and the first Osprey and Swallow of the spring.

Further observation in the evening produced 9 Common Scoters east, 3 Gannets west, 5 Red-throated Divers east, 1 Arctic Skua east and 6 Sandwich Terns east.
