Tuesday, 6th May 2014

Good sea-watching conditions produced the first Pomarine Skuas today with a flock of eight observed this evening. The birds came in high and started circling for a few minutes, gaining height before being lost as they headed north-east further into the bay. Also swallows were on the move for much of the day with 574 being counted heading north.

15 Common Scoters east, 2 Red-breasted Mergansers east, 5 Red-throated Divers east, 1 Manx Shearwater west, 36 Gannets west, 1 Great Crested Grebe east, 1 Arctic Skua east, 17 Kittiwakes west, 12 Sandwich Terns, 3 Common Terns east, 69 Arctic Terns west & 8 east and 1 Guillemot east.

Further observation in the evening produced 549 Common Scoters east, 2 Red-breasted Mergansers east, 1 Red-throated Diver east, 9 Manx Shearwaters west, 3 Gannets west, 8 Pomarine Skuas east; a single group of light morphs came into the bay high then started circling and gaining height to the north-east before being lost as dots!, 6 Arctic Skuas east, 32 Kittiwakes east, 67 Sandwich Terns east, 8 Common Terns east and 109 Arctic Terns east.

Further observation in the evening produced 71 Common Scoters east, 2 Red-throated Divers east & 1 on the sea, 14 Gannets east, 3 Arctic Skuas east, 14 Kittiwakes east, 21 Sandwich Terns east and 4 Arctic Terns east.
